Knit the Aylesbury

InSpire and I Knit London are giving urban fabric a whole new meaning. They are knitting a scale model of the Aylesbury Estate and aim to capture in wool and fabric the very fibre of the estate that is due to be demolished. They need your help to make it happen.

Open community sessions are being provided to teach basic knitting techniques and top tips. Professional knitters and total amateurs are welcome to take part. All materials provided at open sessions– knit a whole block or just a window pane. They have 2,500 homes to create!

Open community sessions are being held on:

12th July – At Elefest architecture week event– St Mary’s Churchyard, Elephant and Castle SE1, from 6pm-9pm. Includes a free open air screening of archive footage of when the Heygate and Aylesbury were built

16th and 23rd of July, 11-1pm – Older people’s session @ InSpire – FREE TEA & CAKE!

1st August – Kids session 2pm at 2InSpire- celebrating Picture Box’ cinema 1st anniversary, face painting and BBQ.

13th August from 1.30pm -5pm – Thurlow Lodge – Family Knit session

14th August 1pm – 4pm Thurlow Lodge – Family knit session

15th August 2pm – 4pm Open Knit session – InSpire at St Peters – All ages welcome

They will also be at “The Mix” Southwark’s Youth Festival 17th August- Burgess Park

If you can’t attend any sessions you can download a pattern from www.in-spire.org.uk/knit – from 20th July (website is not available until this date)
Creations are to be sent to InSpire by 30th August
