Stitch London the book is here!

Posted by Deadly Knitshade on October 17, 2011

STOMP! RUSTLE! STOMP! RUSTLE! What on earth is that noise? AAAIIIIIIIEEEEEE!!! The woolly Godzilla that is Stitch London has been transformed… into a book! And best of all each book contains a kit to knit the world’s most beautiful ladylike pigeon inside. Woo hoo!

Finally London has its very own knitting book! Stitch London, written by Chief Woolly Godzilla Wranger Lauren O’Farrell and published by the good folks at David & Charles, is a collection of 20+ of Lauren’s kookiest London-themed patterns in one shiny book. It’s her first ever pattern book and it tangles together her two great loves kooky knitting and the lovely pigeon-filled city of London.

Stitch London? Why would I want to knit London?
You can whip up your own HRH to add a bit of majesty to your mantelpiece. You could woolly up your unexciting umbrella with handful of Umbrella Fellas. You can build a knitty city with some little London landmarks, and stop your tea getting tepid with a cockney-rhyming slang Mug Hugger. Whether you’re just visiting or striving to survive as a city knitter, Stitch London is the place for you.

Not a knitter or a bit scared of new knitting challenges?
Fear not! We’ll even show you how to get clicking with your sticks and string. We’re nice like that.

Instant Pigeon Stitching
“Cooo coooo…” Oh yes, and it’s not just full of little knits. The book also contains everything you need to knit the pattern for the quite frankly gorgeous Cooey the Pigeon. Wheeeeeeeee!

Beating the stuffing out of cancer
And lastly a MWA HA HA HAAA in the face of Cancer. At the same time as the book is published Lauren is celebrating 5 years in remission from cancer. With this in mind all sales of this book support Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research to help other people beat the pants off cancer too.

Any more cool stuff?

You get two bonus patterns if you register at You can also follow @cooeythepigeon on Twitter and like her on Facebook for updates and exclusive Stitch London book stuff. Coo-coo-cool.

For those of you who might fear that pigeon knitting is a little too challenging for their needles we’ve made a little movie to show you how easy it is. Knit the Pigeon: the Movie contains scenes of daring rooftop knitting, the innards of the Fleece Station where this little pigeon was first hatched and a rather catchy tune.

You can attend the world premiere by watching it on Youtube here:

Help Us Knit Hats for St Mungos

Posted by Deadly Knitshade on August 30, 2011

Hobbit star Martin Freeman in his Orange Woolly Hat

Woo hoo! We’ve found enough knitters for the 30 hats we needed. But you can still help!

Check out or contact

You Stitch Londoners are amazing. 🙂

Stitch Londoners are a helpful bunch and we’re hoping you can help us help St Mungos.

The St Mungo’s homeless charity want us to knit 30 orange bobble hats to help launch their new campaign. We’re looking for knitters to help out with their needles. We’ll provide the yarn.

What we need you to do: Contact us and sort out picking up the yarn from a Stitch London meeting or from the Fleece Station

What we’re doing: We’re donating all the orange yarn for the hats and helping St Mungo’s find enough knitters to knit them

The free yarn can be picked up from The Fleece Station (address here) or from a Stitch London meeting (unfortunately Stitch London can’t afford to cover the costs of sending it out to people so it’ll have to be London knitters only). The pattern will be sent to you via email.

If you fancy helping out please contact us at with the subject header: ‘I want to make woolly hats’ and tell us:

1. How many hats you will knit

2. Where you will pick up the yarn from

Hats left to find knitters for: 0

What happens if I missed out on knitting one of the hats?!?! Never fear. Though we only need to help make 30 hats  (as we’re busy with lots of events so can’t manage all St Mungo’s knits ourselves) there is still the chance to help!

Happily you can still knit for St Mungo’s once we’re done. You can contact them at and find out more about Woolly Hat Day at Hurrah!

Exclusive Stitch London patterns to kick the c**p out of cancer

Posted by Deadly Knitshade on September 6, 2010

Cancer is utterly rubbish. It is a fiendish foe that deserves jabbing with our DPNs until it gives up and goes away. Fancy helping us vanquish cancer by supporting those fine folks fighting it and treating yourself to one of three fabulous knitting patterns?

Team Raging Wool are a six-person team of knitters (and those sympathetic to the woolly cause) whose mission is to kick the tar out of Cancer by trekking 20 miles across London in one night for Maggie’s Centre Night Hike on 17 September.

To help team Raging Wool reach their target of £1200 they’re offering three patterns for which they invite you to donate and download.

Another reason to donate: Stitch London are also going to teach a ‘Stitch a Squid’ workshop at  Maggie’s Centre later in the month. Knitting is the perfect way to fill hospital time and time spent in waiting rooms, as well as being hugely therapeutic (as you all know). Help us to help them.

Helping Macmillan keep cancer fighters cosy

Posted by Deadly Knitshade on July 27, 2009

Macmillan are lovely folks. They’ve been improving the lives of cancer fighters since way back in 1911 and this year they have teamed up with The Knitter magazine to ask for your help.

A Nationwide campaign called the Macmillan Comfort Blanket, in association with the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning on 25th September and supported by Rowan, has been launched.

They’re asking folks to knit 20cm x 20cm squares to make up Comfort Blankets. The blankets will consist of 40 squares (8 long and 5 wide). Each will be handed over to someone who is living with cancer to make them cosy while they fight their battle.

Fabulous designers (Amanda Crawford, Debbie Bliss, Jane Crowfoot, Jean Moss, and Martin Storey) from all over the knitting planet are joining in with some jaw-dropping square patterns which you can download on Macmillan’s website. Or you can make something even more stitch-worthy of your own.

Coffee Mornings will be taking place all over the UK on the 25th of September. But as we’re evening owls we’ll be planning a Macmillan Comfort Blanket meeting to bring your squares to and sew up blankets at the end of September.

Until then you can send your Comfort Blankets to:

The Knitter Macmillan Comfort Blanket
Future Publishing Ltd
30 Monmouth Street

or drop it off with them at The Knitting and Stitching Show at Alexander Palace in October.

You can also register for a coffee morning or donate online or call 0845 602 1246 quoting NA3

Knit and win the Moustache Ring of Power

Posted by Deadly Knitshade on July 5, 2009

The Moustache Ring of Power

The Moustache Ring of Power

We had so much fun wearing our moustaches for WWKIP day that we don’t want it to stop – so we’re having another competition. S&B London member Clare (Dragonflysky on Ravelry) has generously donated a very covetable Tatty Devine moustache ring to the cause.

The prize will go to the person who has sends us the best picture of themselves wearing a knitted or crocheted moustache – make us smile, make us laugh, make us proud, and you’re in with a good chance.  If you haven’t made a moustache yet – it’s not too late.

Download one of our patterns, then get stitching that face fur.

All photos will go on our blog for the world to admire your knitted nose neighbours.

To enter, email us at with the following:

•    Subject line “A moustache is for life, not just for WWKIP day”
•    A jpeg image of yourself wearing your moustache with the filename yourname.jpg (yourname being your own name, not the word yourname) attached to the email
•    Your full name, email address and contact phone number (if you have one)

The deadline for the competition is Monday 13th July at 10am. The winner will be decided upon by a panel of Stitchettes, based on the excellence of your photo, and notified by phone or email by the end of the week.

If we took a photo of you and your Mo on the Knit Crawl then feel free to find it here and use that one. 🙂

Competition rules: 1. One entry per person. 2. Competition ends 13th July 2009 at 10am. 4. Winner will be chosen by a panel of judges and notified by email or phone. 5. If winner doesn’t reply with within two weeks of closing date then a new winner will be chosen. 5. No cash alternatives. 6. Ring will be posted to winner.

Posted by Deadly Knitshade on June 1, 2009

Who in the world does not admire a fine bristling bit of face fur? The moustache has been wooing women (and men), winning hearts, and being twirled in a dastardly manner since the dawn of time. The Stitch and Bitch London Tashtastic Knit Crawl 2009

Posted by Deadly Knitshade on May 31, 2009

In 2007 we Knit Crawled for Cancer Research, in 2008 we Knit Crawled for Breast Cancer Care, this year Worldwide Knit in Public Day looms once more. The Stitch and Bitch London Knit Crawl 2009 has a far manlier theme…

The Stitch and Bitch London Tashtastic Knit Crawl 2009 will take to the streets of lovely London Town on Saturday the 13th of June.

We’ll stomp our way across four iconic London sights:

Tower Bridge: get down with the ravens and explain to tourists they’re not at London Bridge

Tate Modern: knit it up all arty-like in the gargantuan turbine hall where passers-by will assume you are an art installation

London Eye: get your stitch on in Jubilee Gardens under the gaze of the all-seeing London Eye

Trafalgar Square: a Knit Crawl traditional. Say hi to the Lions and furiously blend in with whatever festival happens to be taking place there, while knitting like you mean it

This year we’re doing it bloke-flavoured, raising money for the Prostate UK Charity in a tashtastic manner. We’ll be knitting (and possibly wearing, for those with no shame) moustaches for that manly feel.

CLICK HERE for our S&B London Tashtastic Knit Crawl Moustache Patterns.

We’ll also be offering some knit-flavoured raffle prizes, free gifts, and the chance to wear a knitted moustache in public (optional).

And you may be able to buy this fine face fur for the price of a donation on the day.

Race for Life: Woolly hats for cancer fighters (almost FREE pattern)

Posted by Deadly Knitshade on March 15, 2009

Because Cancer Research is about those who are fighting, as well as those we have sadly lost, we’re going to be knitting chemo caps as we go (knitting as you walk is optional). The caps will be donated to various cancer wards across London.

S&B London are offering two fabulous chemo hat patterns for a minimum £2 donation

(give more if you like)

There is a round hat and a square hat. Both are easy to knit and very quick (use whatever yarn you like, as long as it’s not scratchy).

To donate click here and give as much as you like.

Donate first then CLICK HERE to download our S&B London Cancer Fighter hat patterns once you’ve donated.

We’d love to see the hats you end up making too. Send any pictures to

We plan to donate them to local London cancer wards so get in touch for an address if you have rustled some up, or bring them along to an S&B meeting.

If you want to join our Race for Life team and race along with us you can see all the details here. We’d love to have you join us.

PS If you download without donating we won’t know. But you’ll know. It will slowly eat away at your conscience in the night. Eventually you’ll end up living on a hill in the middle of the wilderness talking to your imaginary friends and knitting with your own hair. So be nice and donate. Even a teeny bit helps.

Race for Life: We walk all over cancer in running spikes

Posted by Deadly Knitshade on March 15, 2009

S&B Londoners have always thought that cancer was really rubbish. We’ve been helping battle it since day one with our knits. There was our London Lion Scarf and our Blanket for Breast Cancer. And now we’re Racing for Life because cancer just can’t seem to take the hint.
Tina ‘Wickedwoollywitch’ Bragaglia is doing the Race for Life (bright red stick and all) in memory of her brother. You can see her sponsor page here. We thought that was rather fabulous and couldn’t let her race alone.
So inspired by Tina, and other teams such as Socktopus and IKnit , we at S&B London are joining in Race for Life too. We’re joining the event on the 6th of May at 7pm in Battersea Park (so no time off work or weekends taken up required).

Join Team S&B London

The race is on the 6th of May at 7pm in Battersea Park. We’d love you to join us whether you help us raise a little or a lot.
To sign up just drop us an email at We’ll let you know how to sign up and we’ll add you to the team.

We’ll be racing in a group at a walking pace to make sure some of us less gazelle-like members don’t walk on their own.

Sponsor Team S&B London

For those of you who can’t be at the Race you can sponsor us here:
You can sponsor us at

We’re offering two Cancer Fighter Hat patterns for you to knit while you race, or knit while you cheer our team on. You can see the ALMOST FREE PATTERNS here (and get them for the price of a donation to S&B London). CLICK HERE TO FIND OUT MORE.
